Thrall Oilfield Field Trip – Oct 24, 2026

We are hosting the Thrall Oilfield field trip on Saturday, October 24th, 2026 at 8 am. If you are interested in joining us, please send an email to Mustafa at mbudak@pdq.net with your full name, email address, and phone number. The deadline to register is Monday, October 19th.

This trip will include a stop at a section of the oilfield where the owner will provide information on the field’s production history. We will discuss the available geological and geophysical data to shed light on the origin of the Thrall volcanic field. Although the volcano, its feeder dike(s), and its production tuff are buried over 600 feet deep, we will be able to reconstruct the volcanic process in three dimensions using available geologic data.

Afterward, we will tour the site (2000 x 2000 feet), stopping at some of the wells drilled during the oil rush, as well as the significant coring location of #102. We will look at a brief history of these wells and discuss the core samples to shed light on the evolution of the volcano. Please note that the site features rolling terrain and some fence crossings.

Lastly, Mustafa’s long-time friend who resides in Taylor has been collecting geodes, fossils, rocks, and even a piece of serpentine from an oil well. He has kindly welcomed our group to visit his house and adjacent workshop to view these exciting findings immediately after our Thrall oilfield tour.

These two stops will take about three to four hours total. Our gathering point is the BEG parking lot adjacent to Burnet Road, and we will depart at 8:00 AM sharp. More detailed information will be provided later for registered participants.
