Advancing geology in central Texas since 1965
AGS FIELD TRIP – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15
Leaders: David Johns and Scott Hiers
Location: Wenzel/Stoneledge Quarry, 15950 Oak Arbor Trail, Manchaca, TX
Google Map: bit.ly/wenzelWQPL
Time: Meet at 8:30 AM at the quarry entrance. Please plan to arrive on time (we’ll need to close the gate 10 minutes after the event starts) and to stay for the entire event. Note that smoking and pets are not allowed and no bathrooms or running water are available on site.
Difficulty: Moderate – expect elevation changes and uneven terrain
Description: Join David Johns and Scott Hiers as they lead a field trip to explore the first true recharge enhancement project jointly developed by Austin Water and Austin Watershed Protection. The City of Austin recently completed the Recharge Enhancement Project on Little Bear Creek, which diverts flood water into the quarry.
This diversion channel reveals new outcrops of the Kirschberg evaporite member of the Edwards Group. The quarry floor also exposes the dolomitic member of the Edwards Group, featuring excellent examples of organic mounds and other notable formations.
The 2-mile hike includes steep slopes and potentially slippery, uneven terrain. Please follow all safety instructions and maintain a safe distance from the quarry edge. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and bring water and sun protection.
We’ll meet at 8:30 AM at the quarry entrance. Carpooling can be arranged if needed.

IMPORTANT! NEXT PROPOSED FIELD TRIP: Dec. 6th or Dec.13th, 2025. Gault Archaeological Site, Florence, Texas: Gault (archaeological site) - Wikipedia
